在今沧州南皮县城西北五公里处，有一座坟墓，当地人称将军坟。封土高1．9米，东西长5米，南北宽2．5米。墓地保护得比较完整。曾有西周晚期青铜器“分伯吉父”盘出土，记述了尹吉甫征北严犹和征收南淮夷贡赋情况。清乾隆还曾派员祭祀，并且还立有石碑，但是后来石碑被毁掉了。
通过出土文物的佐证和官方的认同，基本可以确定此墓主人应是西周时期宰相、军事家、诗人、哲学家尹吉甫。尹吉甫墓现为河北省重点保护文物。
尹吉甫（公元前852年-公元前775年），姓兮，名甲，字伯吉父，西周时期的韩国人，是尹国的国君。因为被封于尹，所以也将他叫做尹吉甫。在西周时期，尹吉甫是有名的宰相，曾辅助周宣王振兴周朝，尹吉甫文能治国，武能安邦。有一次北方少数民族猃狁（古民族）进犯，逼近周朝京都镐京（今西安市西南）。周宣王命尹吉甫为大将军，率军北伐，大败猃狁。他征战八方，常年在山西平遥、河北沧州南皮等活动。
周宣王曾经让大臣作诗夸赞尹吉甫说“文武吉甫，天下为宪”。尹吉甫被封为太师，西周之后的统治者都将尹吉甫作为“忠义”至尊的化身，后来成为了历朝历代王公大臣们做官为人的典范。
尹吉甫还是我国诗歌总集《诗经》的总编纂者，自己写出了大量的诗篇，被尊为中华诗祖。《诗经》里赞美尹吉甫功绩的篇章不少，《崧高》、《民》、《韩奕》、《江汉》诸篇更多是他所作。台湾有人说，《诗经》只是用的民歌的形式，其实是尹吉甫一人所作。不论是不是，尹吉甫是比屈原早五百年的大诗人毋庸置疑。
在晚年的时候，尹吉甫依然把国家大事当做己任，时刻考虑到黎民百姓，多次上书规劝周幽王。但是周幽王对于尹吉甫的规劝丝毫不在意，而且还改用奸佞之人，偏偏反其道而行，导致尹吉甫怀揣愤怒辞职还乡，在78岁的时候郁郁而终。
关于尹吉甫墓地的说法，其实不止河北沧州这一处，在河北的房县以及平遥古城内，都有关于尹吉甫墓葬的踪迹。根据相关历史资料记载，仅仅是湖北房县，就有12处尹吉甫墓。
之所以会出现这么多尹吉甫墓，最主要的原因就是为了防止盗墓贼“光顾”。在那么多墓葬中，只有一处才是真正的尹吉甫墓。河北沧州的尹吉甫墓在历史资料中也有记载，最早的时候出现在宋朝的历史文献中。
在宋朝的文献资料中，清朝的乾隆帝就到达过河北沧州，甚至还专门到这座尹吉甫墓进行祭拜。但是这处墓葬到底是不是尹吉甫墓，还存在很多疑点，因为古墓中缺乏可验证的资料，所以事情的真相到底如何，还需要继续研究。
在历史资料的记载中，周幽王对于尹吉甫有很深的愧疚感，所以在尹吉甫死后，周幽王为其打造了一个金头。但是从南皮这座西周古墓来看，里面不仅没有金头，就连一些基本的陪葬品都没了，那么也就无法证明墓中之人到底是不是尹吉甫了。
因为尹吉甫所处的时代距今历史久远，我们对这位伟大的政治家、哲学家、军事家及中华诗祖提生平经历和思想精髓的研究还远远不够，不能不说是一大遗憾。
