豆，属五谷（稻、黍、稷、麦、豆）之一。昔日，乡间广为种植，以黄豆、绿豆居多。
农谚云“灰里芝麻泥里豆”，意即芝麻在灰土里就可发芽，而豆就要墒情足，方能出好苗。庄稼筋们往往趁墒情好了才下种，几天工夫，嫩芽便急不可耐争先恐后拱了出来，一行行，一簇簇，淡雅，清新。夏日里雨水勤，豆秧可劲地长，碧绿的叶子盖满了地，豆秧就一心致志地开花，结荚，及至硕果累累。秋虫唧唧，豆叶仿佛完成了使命，便渐次黄萎着退场了。落光了叶子，饱满的果就期待收获了。这时节，也是顽童快乐的时光。往往几个小伙伴一约，便偷偷溜到黄豆地里，匆匆忙忙拽上几棵，又飞奔着寻了地沟，找柴的找柴，点火的点火，不一会儿，一股浓烟升起，黄豆在火中哔啪作响，顿时，香气四溢。早有性急地脱了衣服，用力扇去余火，小伙伴们便一哄而上，鸡啄食般，抢了起来。一个个烫得龇牙咧嘴的，仍觉满口余香，回味不已。
绿豆，边开花边结荚。绿豆的花，密密匝匝的，宛若展翅欲飞的蝴蝶，聚于一处，互诉着心声。垂挂的一串串果荚，昨日还绿着的，一夜之间，就黑乎乎一片了。采摘回，阳光下曝晒，叭叭叭，脆响声一片，绿莹莹的绿豆便欢快地蹦了出来。有孩童觉得有趣，在上面蹦来跳去的，听着脚下如小鞭炮炸响，甚是欢喜。绿豆虽属杂粮，作用不可小觑。三伏天里，绿豆汤是最佳的消暑饮品呢。
也少有豌豆、黑豆、豇豆等。豌豆，以前生产队作饲料用，但对孩童，却有着极大的诱惑。豌豆角生吃，脆，甜，味道并不亚于水果。我们常趁护田的回家吃饭的间隙，去偷豌豆角。有时，被护田的发现了，一声咋呼，我们也顾不上抹去嘴角绿色的汁液，四散着跑开了。如今再见到豌豆角，竟勾不起一点儿食欲了。豇豆，一般春节包豆包用。吃腻了大鱼大肉，来一口豇豆包，绝对的爽口爽心。
“红豆生南国，春来发几枝。愿君多采撷，此物最相思。”作为有情物的红豆，又被多少青年男女青睐有加呢。
豆浆、豆腐、豆干等豆制品，更是家家户户餐桌上的“常客”。因为家常，所以最具亲和力了，老少咸宜。以前最常吃的，恐怕要数豆豉了。豆豉，由黄豆蒸熟了，再发酵，然后日日晒之，至晒出了酱，方成。酱香浓郁的豆豉，滴几滴香油，馒头蘸之，味道醇香浓厚。细细嚼之，顿觉唇齿生香。冬季少蔬菜，豆豉就可以对付一个冬天了。农家也常泡些黄豆芽或绿豆芽，因为纯天然的，所以黄豆芽越嚼越香，绿豆芽爽脆可口。
农谚说，四体不勤，五谷不分。小时候听过这样一则笑话：城里人结识了乡下人，城里人到田间，指着黄豆荚，问里面什么颜色？乡下人答：黄的。见到黑黑的绿豆荚，又问里面什么颜色？绿的。剥开一看，果其然。城里人大惊，说乡下人真了不起！乡下人到城里做客时，城里人赶快让内人躲了，说乡下人能隔皮识货，能隔着衣服看到你的肉的。忽而忆及，不禁莞尔。
豆，多味生活的点缀。自然的本味，深入情怀，缕缕萦回。
